An 11-year-old boy has been recognised for his incredibly heroic actions when he took over a 999 call as his dad went into cardiac arrest.

On the 2nd of March, Winston was at home with his dad Mike and little brother Mani, when Mike suddenly started experiencing tingling sensations in his left arm and severe chest pains.

Mike immediately called 999, but his condition started to deteriorate quickly, sending him into cardiac arrest. Winston instinctively jumped in, taking over the phone call, where Emergency Medical Advisor Casey Matthews directed him to retrieve help from a passerby who then quickly started to perform CPR.

Doctor Edward and his team of paramedics, Bethan, George, and Claire, from Enhanced Care Services, were working at the Brighton Half marathon and were nearby when they received the call, rapidly arriving at the scene. The team from ECS started resuscitation, administering a life-saving shock with a defibrillator, placing an automated chest compression device, and intubating Mike.

Shortly after, Associate Ambulance Practitioner, Holly Osborne, Paramedic William Dennis, and Operational Team Leader, Molly Chilton-Dobner arrived to assist from South East Coast Ambulance Service. Having regained a pulse, and being anaesthetised by the ECS team, Mike was taken to the hospital, where he underwent major heart surgery and spent a week recovering.

Mike and his son Winston have since visited the Brighton Make Ready Centre, where they were introduced to some of his incredible lifesavers, including Nick, Holly, Molly, Casey, Noah, Alexi, and Doctor Edward.

Winston was awarded a certificate in recognition of his life-saving actions and exceptional bravery. You can read more about this incredible story here.
