ECS Launches New Medical Student Placement Opportunity!

In conjunction with the University of Southampton and University Hospitals Southampton, ECS has launched a brand new Pre-hospital and Event Medicine Student Selected Unit for final year medical students.

Supported by Dr Iain Beardsell, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Associate Clinical Sub Dean for the University of Southampton, ECS were approached to offer a blended 3 week placement opportunity offering students the ability to gain experience in pre-hospital care and event medicine, whilst also learning useful skills for their future careers.

I am delighted by this partnership and the opportunity it gives to both the students and our people who will be working alongside them. For many years students have thrived at ECS and I’m looking forward to supporting more to experience a side of medicine which is both competitive and unique.
— Craig Harman, Chief Operating Officer, ECS

The Pre-hospital and Event Medicine Student Selected Unit will take place multiple times per year, each providing three students a fully funded First Response in Emergency Care Level 3 (FREC 3) qualification, followed by two weeks of observational exposure across ambulance, event medicine and clinical education activity.

Following the students’ successful completion of the SSU, they will also be eligible to apply for a role within ECS as part of our First Responder team, further expanding their clinical experience, backed by robust governance and appropriate supervision.

Being able to offer medical students an opportunity to learn about event medicine and pre-hospital care whilst also providing them with a formal qualification is really exciting.

Having personally been provided a number of opportunities as a medical student which ultimately led to my career in Emergency Medicine and pre-hospital Care, I can’t wait to see ECS offer those same opportunities to the next generation of Doctors.
— Dr Edward Langford, Managing Director, ECS

The first SSU will take place in the Summer of 2024 and will be open to interested medical students at the University of Southampton Medical School, and is hosted by University Hospitals Southampton, in conjunction with Enhanced Care Services.
